Peel is the gateway to Greater Toronto and indeed Canada, being home to Canada's largest and busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International. The Peel area (which includes the cities of Brampton, Mississauga) and adjacent Oakville (Halton region) also has the distinction of a statistically high percentage of Muslims as part of the general population (between 5-10%). While South Asian immigrants make up the majority of this Muslim population, it includes significant communities of Middle Eastern, African, Persian, and Turkish backgrounds. With this diversity comes variety. From the renowned Indian, Bengali, and West Indian eateries in Brampton to the dozens of Chinese, Arabic, Afghan-Persian and Canadian fast-food (Pizza, Fried Chicken) restaurants in the Mississauga area, Peel has Halal options for everyone. The neighbourhood of Dixie Road and Eglinton Road in Mississauga now has in excess of 20 Halal restaurants. It is colloquially known as the 'Muslim Village'. Specialty Halal restaurants, like those offering Italian, Turkish and Thai cuisine, can be found in a number of locations across the region. Increasingly, upscale mainstream restaurants have also begun offering Halal menus in the growing premium Muslim market. Superstore and grocery locations in Peel, such as Wal-Mart, Metro and Food Basics, now routinely partake in Ramadan and Eid campaigns by offering sales on popular Halal food items which they carry in increasing numbers. Halal Meat stores and those carrying imported groceries can be found in every neighhbourhood, with the Dundas/Hurontario St. corridor containing the highest concentration.
